Summer can be a time of renewal, when we allow ourselves to get away or take a break from the ordinary routine of life, whether it be a favorite getaway, discovering a new place or a staycation. Renewal can also come from connecting with family and friends, a good book time in nature or even a new perspective.
The key to spiritual renewal is to be open to the work of the Holy Spirit. After Jesus ascends into heaven, the Holy Spirit enables the apostles to carry out God's work.
Like the apostles, the Spirit allows us to do extraordinary things when we tap into "the flow of grace" that God constantly provides. But it doesn’t happen automatically. We must make time for prayer and practice docility, or being receptive to God, by being open to the Spirit through praise, worship and prayer. St. Paul says, “he must increase; I must decrease.” (John 3:30)
Use this summer to renew your body, mind and spirit by going to Mass more often or praying before the Blessed Sacrament (see the adoration schedule). Try the Daily Examen, a prayer practice that invites the Spirit to help you see where God is working in your life. Visit Encounter to learn the five simple steps involved.
Call upon the Spirit so that you can grow more open to God and better use the gifts he’s given you to love and serve others.
