Tuesday of the Fifth Week of Lent

Lectionary 252

John 8:21-30:

“They did not (understand)…”

Meditation

Jesus spoke to people about a God who loved them in a way that went beyond their usual understanding of love. To understand the meaning of this newly revealed love, they would have to look beyond their everyday experience. "You belong to what is below; I belong to what is above."

When people are confused and do not understand a new experience, they are inclined to get frustrated and give up. However, people who were persistent in trying to understand the newness of Jesus' message came to believe in him. They wrestled with God (and with themselves) to discover the life that he was offering.

At La Salette, the children initially did not understand what the Beautiful Lady said. It was not just that she spoke a different language than they did; she also discussed problems beyond their grasp. Nonetheless, they knew something important was being said and shared their story with others at home. Their willingness to share their confusion was their way of wrestling with God. Because they did not give up when confused, they (and others) came to a new understanding of God's love.

Reflection Questions

  • Is it difficult to believe God will guide you through life's confusing experiences?
  • Are you willing to wrestle with God to discover God in new ways?
