Saturday after Ash Wednesday

Lectionary 222

Luke 5:27-32

"I have come not to call the righteous to repentance but sinners."

Meditation

Webster's dictionary defines myopia as a “deficiency of foresight or discernment.” So, myopia is not only a matter of our eyes; our minds can be myopic as well. Lack of discernment makes it challenging to see ourselves as we are. Somehow, we overlook our shortcomings, character flaws, and sins. Yet only when we see ourselves as we are can we respond to Jesus' invitation to a change of heart and conversion.

If we consider ourselves healthy, we don't go to a doctor even though we may need care. Similarly, if we consider ourselves spiritually healthy, we don't go to Jesus for a change of heart. No matter where we are on our spiritual journey, there is always room for change, for conversion. Jesus called Levi to a change of heart, calling us to a change of heart.

At La Salette, Mary came to call us to a change of heart and to focus our entire lives on her Son. She assures us of our abundant harvest "if they are converted."

Reflection Questions:

  • Can I hear and respond to Jesus' call no matter what my myopic vision sees in me?
  • Do I examine myself and accept myself as I truly am? Do I do the same for others?
