First Communion

Required sacramental preparation classes: Which one is right for your child?

Sacramental preparation for first, second, or third grades

Sacramental preparation is a two-year religious education process. The first-year religious preparation needs to be completed in order to receive Reconciliation and First Communion in the second year. If your child is entering second or third grade with NO religious education you will need to register them as a Year 1 student.

Sacramental preparation for fourth grade and older

OCIC: Students coming into the Catholic Church needing Baptism AND First Communion should register for the Order of Christian Initiation for Children, offered Sundays at 8:45am. Click here to register for OCIC. Contact Stephanie Holden.

Voyage: Voyage: If your child is in fourth grade or older and still needs to receive First Communion, you will enroll your child in a class called Voyage. Voyage meets on Monday nights, during Launch Children's Ministry sessions, from 5:30-7:00pm and walks your child through the foundations of our Catholic faith, as well as the specifics for receiving First Reconciliation and First Communion. If you need more information, please contact the Voyage coordinator, Kristen Ott at kott@st-ann.org.

Mandatory workshops for Year 2 students

Sacramental Workshops

  • Per Fr. Jim’s request, all Sacramental Year 2 parents are now required to attend 7 workshops that are provided during their child’s Year 2 year.
Workshops are once a month on the following dates:
    -Sept. 4
    -Oct.16
    -Nov. 13
    -Dec. 11
    -Jan. 8, 2025
    -Feb. 12, 2025
    -March 12, 2025

Workshops are from 7:15pm-8:15pm in the main church after the 6:30pm Mass and are for parents only (no children). One or more guardians of the sacramental child must attend.

• Babysitting will be provided during the workshops.

• Workshops will also be live-streamed and recorded, so if you are unable to attend, you can watch the session and submit a report for credit.

• Workshops will be over the parts of the Mass, and if the family attends the Family Mass at 10:30am the following Sunday, they will see a special highlight of the section covered in the workshop.

• Parents who sign up as volunteer catechists (religious ed teachers), do not have to attend the workshops, because they will be covering the material discussed within their classes.  Attendance is required for the student and one parent.
