Saturday of the Fifth Week of Lent

Lectionary 256

John 11:45-56:

Everybody will believe in him

Meditation

Those who did not understand feared that unless they took steps to control Jesus' popularity, they might lose what insured their security—their sanctuary and nation. They feared the whole world would change entirely and affect their security. It never occurred to them that a world transformed by God's love might be desirable for everyone, not only for themselves but for everyone. It seemed to them too good to be true.

Just as the gospel is meant for all people, the story of La Salette is intended for the whole world to hear. People who understand that God's compassion is more powerful (and necessary) than our sinning realize that they have shared in something that must be passed on—a spirit of reconciliation.

Reflection Questions

  • Do you desire to control people and situations, thus preventing others from experiencing God's love?
  • Do you feel a need to cling to a false sense of security?
