Wednesday of the Fifth Week of Lent

Lectionary 253

John 8:31-42:

The truth will set you free.

Meditation

Jesus' words promising freedom were directed at people who had not realized how enslaved they were. They paid so much attention to the details of the Law that they could not appreciate its spirit. They were well-intentioned but had a shallow understanding of what it means to believe. That kind of belief is itself enslaving.

At La Salette, Mary encouraged people to avoid shallowness in their faith. She asked, “Do you pray well?” Praying well was not simply a matter of saying more prayers. It meant that fidelity to prayer would help people be honest with themselves and open them to the truth that would set them free.

Reflection Questions

  • If Jesus could accept society's outcasts, do you find it hard to take them?
  • Do you find it difficult to accept the truth about yourself? Are you afraid to be truly free?
