Where does your faith fit in when you make those annual resolutions? Here are some ideas for adding a spiritual component to your commitments.
Read the Bible. Join one of the Encounter Bible studies. January sessions are registering now at st-ann.org/encounter.
Meet the saints. Learn about a new saint every week or month and try to imitate his or her life and virtues. Use these sites to help:
• franciscanmedia.org/saint-of-the-day
•
mycatholic.life/saints/saints-of-the-liturgical-year
•
aleteia.org/author/meg-hunter-kilmer/page/3 (biographies of 50 saints)
Commit to daily prayer. Spend a certain amount of time every day just being still before the Lord. Start with 15 minutes a day, try to stretch it to 20 for Lent, then go from there. Need help on how to do it? Read Becky Eldredge’s book “The Inner Chapel.” It will transform your quiet prayer time.
Sign up for a holy hour. Adoration is honoring the presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Sign up for a time (let’s face it, there is more accountability when we sign up for something). Visit st-ann.org/adoration for details.
Go on a retreat. It can be really difficult to leave behind home, work and family, but a retreat can be life-changing. Try Ignatius House in Sandy Springs, ignatiushouse.org, or the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers, trappist.net/plan-your-visit/retreats.
Resolutions are hard to keep, but we belong to a church that continually gives us a second chance. So, make these commitments and set yourself a reminder for Feb. 10 (just before Ash Wednesday) to check in on how things are going, and try to start fresh for Lent. Then do the same thing for Easter, for Ordinary Time and again for Advent. By the end of the year, you
will have made a real change!
