Wellness in mind, body and spirit. St. Ann’s Pastoral Care office works to offer all of these things to the community, developing relationships with local health care groups to provide helpful and timely resources for our parishioners.
St. Ann has been in partnership with Aloha to Aging, Inc., for some time. The Marietta organization offers healthy aging, wellness and educational programs. Last month a participants packed a room on campus for A Day in the Life (pictured above), a sensitivity course designed to give a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by those who are aging.
“We were asked to do tasks simulating how a senior or someone with a disability would feel or react,” said Maria Elena Rodriguez, parishioner and Pastoral Care staffer. “One example was to put on heavy gloves and try to button a shirt. It was very difficult and frustrating to not be able to a simple task!”
Participants also donned taped glasses and earplugs to attempt everyday things like reading and conversation. “I left class with an immense compassion for the elderly,” said Rodriguez. The class will be held at St. Ann’s again on Sept. 26.
Aloha to Aging also facilitates HeART Strings, a program in which individuals with dementia engage with area musicians and artists for a multi-sensory experience. St. Ann’s is hosting sessions Sept. 5-Oct. 3.
“We are very grateful for our longtime partnership with St. Ann, whose values and mission are in alignment with ours allowing for a quality program experience to support aging adults and their families,” said Dawn Reed, Aloha’s founder and president.
Another group joins the team Aug. 10 to provide a course for those with Parkinson’s disease. Empower Recreational Therapy will facilitate Delay the Disease, which includes strength training, mobility and facial exercises, and multi-tasking skills.
“It is an honor to collaborate with two community pillars to expand the opportunity for this PD-specific fitness and recreational therapy program,” said Laura Kelly, founder and CEO of Empower. Her organization provides personalized therapy for older adults and supports aging-in-place efforts in our area.
“We are blessed that our collaboration with these organizations enables us to bring these wonderful programs to parishioners and our surrounding community,” said Linda Walsh, Pastoral Care director.
