In this Sunday’s gospel there is a lot that shows Jesus’s need for us to go forth. This gospel oftentimes is referred to as the great commission because he is sending his disciples out with a purpose. Even in their doubt, Jesus needs them to seek others out. Jesus is relying on us to bring his father’s children home. He desires a relationship with us. And, ultimately because we know him, we must tell others about him. In this passage, Jesus is sharing the responsibility of sharing the love of Christ with those whom we encounter and not only sharing it with them but allowing his mercy to wash over them in the sacrament of baptism. Jesus isn’t just saying here speak my name but he is saying allow them to encounter me in such a way that they would want their whole life changed. He is giving us the courage and boldness to proclaim his love from the mountaintops. Finally, Jesus reminds us in the last sentence of the gospel of Matthew that he will never abandon us. Jesus is with us until the end of the age, he will continue to walk by our sides and encourage us with his overwhelming love. Jesus never calls us to somewhere he hasn’t been first.
