Season of beginnings Why does the liturgical calendar start with Advent? The liturgical calendar is designed to trace Christ’s life and teachings. Advent is the first season of the liturgical year because this time is designated as the preparation for the birth of Jesus. The calendar also acknowledges the role of Mary and the saints by designating various feast days and celebrations to commemorate their contributions to the faith. After the Advent and Christmas seasons, the liturgical calendar has several weeks of Ordinary Time, designed for reflection on Christ’s works and their meaning in our lives today.
Reflection: First Week of Advent
When asked to write this opening reflection for Advent, it immediately hit me that with the coming of Year B, we are now in my favorite Gospel - St. Mark.
In the Gospel’s opening, closing and center lines, we are told: “Be watchful/Watch/Watch therefore.” Ya think Jesus might be trying to say something to us?? The Lord also tells us that “sleeping” is the enemy of watching. That’s because sleeping in Scripture is an image for inattentiveness. With each new Advent, the Church reminds us of the “three comings of our Lord.” First, when Jesus historically came in the Incarnation, born of the Virgin Mary. Second, when our Lord will come in glory “to judge the living and the dead.” But thirdly, he comes into our lives - in each moment of every day. As we pivot from Ordinary Time into Advent, let us all be aware that the Lord is ALREADY in our midst - as we are called out of the sleep of inattentiveness to notice him in the ordinary.
