It would be easy to suppose St. Ann’s spiritual directors were overworked this last year. After all, it is their job to help people as they discern important decisions, grieve a loss, question God or doubt their faith.
But maybe you didn’t even know about this role in the parish. Carol Busche and Anne Birth are spiritual directors: they listen to both the seeker and to the Holy Spirit, who is the true director of the ministry.
“Spiritual direction is not counseling or therapy,” Busche said. “Our call is to facilitate a relationship with the Lord.”
Spiritual direction is a form of pastoral care that centers on intentional conversation about the reality of God in daily life. The spiritual director helps someone notice and respond to God’s transforming presence. Sessions are monthly and normally occur one-on-one for 50 minutes.
St. Ann’s has been offering spiritual direction since 2009. Birth joined the ministry in 2020 after completing four years of coursework.
“I have grown so much through spiritual direction,” Birth said. “It’s an ongoing adventure of self-awareness and becoming who God made me to be.”
Spiritual directors are ethically bound to confidentiality, which ensures directees feel safe sharing their most important life experiences.
“I feel it is indeed a blessing and a privilege to sit with others as we attempt to discover God’s presence,” Busche said.
People going through a transition, seeking guidance or needing a renewal of faith often find this process rewarding and meaningful. To schedule an appointment, contact Busche or Birth (information listed above).
