Community fundraiser: Women's Council grants bolster parish, charities

Perhaps you mark your calendar by their big events: Apple Annie and the garage sale, winter bookends of shopping gold. But did you know these sales – brought to you by the St. Ann’s Council of Catholic Women – result in major donations to our church and to the community?

The Women’s Council has been around nearly as long as the parish itself. It is made up of three guilds – one for all women of the parish, one for mothers and one for Spanish speakers – and they meet regularly for socializing, planning, service projects and special programs.

Taking center stage this time of year is the group’s garage sale, an event that will generate grants for area charities and a major gift to St. Ann.

“The garage sale has had a huge impact on some local families,” said sale manager Beth Kosbab. “One young mom told us she was able to shop for clothes for her entire family to clothe them for an entire year. The garage sale gives her a dignified place to shop.”

The Women’s Council has donated more than $200,000 to the parish and more than half a million dollars to area charities, such as Pregnancy Aid Clinic and Beacon of Hope.
