Building Community: Safe helps families make connections

You might say the ministries at St. Ann’s are like families within our church family. It’s where you go to build a smaller community within a big parish like ours. But there’s one ministry where you find actual families building themselves a church family. It’s called SAFE.

St. Ann’s Family Enrichment is a ministry that believes in bringing young families together. Its leaders create events such as this weekend’s Legomania and Trunk or Treat in order to nurture relationships they hope will keep them and their children connected to St. Ann’s for years to come.

“It’s wonderful to have opportunities to gather families together to build friendships among children and parents,” said Beth Kosbab, who leads SAFE alongside Sarah Murphy.

“Our goal is to connect families to our parish life through social, service and faith-based activities. This allows us all to grow together as a community and truly become a supportive extended family.”

SAFE began about ten years ago as part of an effort to serve the growing number of parish families. Its events are no- and low-cost affairs that are supplemented by proceeds from SAFE’s sole fundraiser: the reserved pews and parking raffle for Christmas Masses. In addition to Legomania in Nolan Hall Sunday at 11:30am, SAFE families can look forward to the kids’ cooking night next month and the ever-popular family movie night.

“We start the evening with board games for kids to play before we serve a free pizza dinner,” Kosbab said of the movie night in January. “Parents get a chance to visit as the kids watch and we all have a really good time.”
