DESCRIPTION:Throats will be blessed at 9am Mass on February 3\, the Feast of St Blaise \nThe Blessing of Throats: Origin and Meaning\nWhat is the Blessing of Throats? \nThe Blessing of Throats is a traditional Catholic sacramental celebrated each year on or around February 3\, the feast day of St. Blaise\, bishop and martyr. During the blessing\, a priest or deacon holds two blessed candles crossed at the throat of each person and prays for protection from illnesses of the throat and from all other evils. \nThe prayer commonly used asks that\, through the intercession of St. Blaise\, God may preserve us from sickness and grant health of body and soul. \nWhere does it come from? \nThe blessing is rooted in the life and miracles of St. Blaise\, a 4th-century bishop of Sebaste (in present-day Armenia). \nAccording to tradition: \nSt. Blaise was known as a holy bishop and a healer. \nWhile he was imprisoned for his Christian faith\, a mother brought her young son to him who was choking on a fish bone. \nSt. Blaise prayed over the child\, and the boy was miraculously healed. \nBecause of this miracle\, St. Blaise became known as the patron saint of those suffering from throat illnesses\, and devotion to him spread quickly throughout the Church. By the Middle Ages\, the blessing of throats became a widely practiced sacramental\, especially during times of illness and epidemics. \nThe use of candles recalls both: \n\nChrist as the Light of the World\nThe candles traditionally blessed on the Feast of the Presentation (Candlemas)\, which is celebrated on February 2\, just before St. Blaise’s feast day.\n\nWhat is the meaning of the blessing? \nThe Blessing of Throats is not a guarantee of physical healing\, nor is it a superstition. It is a sacramental\, meaning it: \n\nDraws us closer to God through prayer\nDisposes our hearts to receive God’s grace\nReminds us to entrust our health and our lives to the Lord\n\nAt a deeper level\, the blessing invites us to reflect on how we use our voices and words: \n\nTo speak truth\nTo pray\nTo bless\, not wound\nTo proclaim Christ with charity and courage\nThrough the intercession of St. Blaise\, we ask God to protect not only our physical throats\, but also our spiritual voice\, so that everything we say may give glory to Him.

SUMMARY:Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Level 1 Formation Course Registration Deadline
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to participate in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Level 1 Catechist Formation\, which prepares you to serve children ages three to six. Sessions are on Saturdays from 9:00am to 4:30pm at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in the Scout Lodge in CGS atrium.\n\nPart 1 (2026): February 14\, April 18\, June 13\, June 14 (1-5pm)\, August 15\, August 16 (1-5pm)\, October 10\nPart 2 (2027): January 9\, March 13\, May 1\, July 31\, September 11\, October 9\, November 6\n\nThis course is designed to include spiritual formation for adults and instruction in this catechesis method to serve young children’s religious life. The pace of this catechist formation is retreat-like\, allowing its contemplative nature to be a prayerful experience for adults and a model for the children’s atrium experience. A three-year cycle of presentations is offered from scripture and liturgy as given to children. Adults will also receive background information on the themes that undergird this approach\, including a foundational study into Maria Montessori’s work with children.\n\nTuition $550 for the complete course.  Fee for auditors who have previously completed formation is $100.  Scholarships for the class are available upon request.  Deadline for registration is January 21\, 2026.

DESCRIPTION:My Brothers Keeper is packing 300 good samaritan bags that will handed out after masses the weekend of January 17th.  They have items the homeless need to help get them through the colder months.  Please pick one or more to keep in your car to give to a homeless person you may see when you are out on your daily activities.  We ask that you put a $10 fast food gift card in each bag so the homeless person can go someplace warm and get a hot meal.  Thanks for your help!
